I think a lot of people (men and women alike, not surprisingly - we are all harmed by the patriarchy in many ways) are just really threatened by the idea that women are people and we don't all fit into the traditional roles that society is most comfortable with. They see a confident woman who knows what she wants and pushes herself to reach her fullest potential and they just start flipping out like "you're not supposed to do that! I'm not comfortable with this! Get back in the kitchen and get yourself pregnant!"

People have such bad attitudes toward feminism because it challenges their core beliefs that were essentially given to them by their own subconscious ignorance.

I think that's a bit heavy-handed. By this point most people under the age of, say, forty are pretty much on board with the concept of female equality to some extent or another, or at least they're not violently opposed to the idea. They're just not particularly concerned with it. So when they see people who are deeply concerned with it and who challenge them on things that they don't really care that much about thinking about in the first place they tend to react negatively, probably in the same way people react when someone is trying really hard to push a band on them when they really couldn't give a ****. Not saying there isn't misogyny influencing culture on some level, but I think indifference is a bigger obstacle than outright hatred at this point.

Indifference is probably the main thing that leads to the mental comfort zone that's causing the oppression in the first place.

My problem with feminism is the implications by so many who are passionate about it that to NOT be passionate about it makes a woman weak or indoctrinated by the male overlords.

Like... **** you, bitch. I've got other hobbies and if a man disrespects me I put him in his place. Problem solved, no help needed.

Not all feminists obviously but there's definitely a certain superiority thing with the ones I've talked to, and its really annoying.

If believing that helps you sleep at night then okay.

Feminism gets a bad rap from all the radicals and feminazis around that hates all men and want to cut their dicks off. They are 2,000 times more vocal than the other side of feminism where it is supposed to be all about equality.

There is just a spectrum within fourth wave feminists even among the sex positive feminists and the ones that want to shame woman for being sex workers.

There is also the divide between those feminists that are anti-trans people and those that support them.

The worst sides of feminists have been tending to get a huge spotlight on it lately and THAT's where the negative associations come from.

Yeah, and the ones that yap on about it are usually from my Mum's generation - well where I come from anyway. I get you when you say that when you appear to not be passionate about it makes a woman weak. I have always been treated as equal but I have friends from certain ethnic groups who definitely are expected to be the good little woman who does all the cooking, childcare and they really don't have much of a life of their own.

As I have already stated I agree with the general feelings of what the women of this forum have posted but I feel the need to play devil's advocate a little bit.

I understand that as people we will always form opinions, even about subjects we are naive to. However, I think it's important to recognize our ignorance and not be so quick to judge the ideology of a culture you are not apart of or have experience participating in.

Just because American culture places a different (not lesser or higher) value on men and women doesn't mean that every other culture is wrong for not believing the same thing.

It fascinates me when people criticize tribal/3rd world/middle eastern/asian cultures and act as if we are somehow superior as people because we share a different ideology. Generally, when I give people this opinion it is not taken seriously and they think I am crazy for being so open minded but I felt like it was appropriate for the discussion.

Yes, its become a web trend at this point. I've even decided to avoid reading comments on articles, youtube, facebook, whatever that has a feminist message because I expect to read some pretty appalling comments (trolling or not).

Then when you do end up reading the comments it's....

Why the hell did I do that for?

Also, I find feminisn and misandry tends to be confused with each other quite often.

i don't mind feminists that hate men. i just dislike feminists that seem obsessed with the messages in pop culture and art because they seem like they constantly want to ruin all of the **** that i enjoy.

This. And the topic could be anything. ANYTHING. The worst was comments to articles/blogs about the death of my BFF at the hands of cops. I didn't know whether to cry or bust heads. I had to remind myself that the anonymity of the internet breeds douches.
