All these terrorist bombings are for religion and that's the bottom line. You don't see anyone bombing for atheism or capitalism, do you?

So if the Bible isn't about killing infidels, how do you explain the Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah? God wipes out the entire Earth, with the exception of one family, because their sinners. The Bible also endorses slavery, rape, stoning, incest, and other terrible things. It's not a moral book.

I don't know why you would blow up something up because you're an athiest. That strikes me as completely illogical. "I'm motivated to do something by a non-belief." That's just silly statement on your part. However, look at Chairman Mao, who squashed freedom of religion, and set himself up as a demagogue. He wasn't exactly like the nicest guy in the world was he?

Also, your statement about capitalism is pretty stupid. While yes, no one is strapping a bomb to their chest and blowing up communes, the amount of evils (e.g. wars, sweatshops) done in the name of capitalism, just in the past decade, is just as wrong as 9/11, in fact, I would argue it's even worse.

The God of the Old Testament does plenty of awful things, but the difference is, HE'S doing them. He's not advocating us to do them to each other. And yes, it endorses plenty of awful things. However, I'm fairly certain that it doesn't repeatedly propagate outright murder of people who don't share your beliefs quite as adamantly as the Quran does.

But that's exactly my point. These suicide bombings and acts of religious terrorism wouldn't occur if there wasn't religion.

You stated that religious acts of terrorism aren't based solely on religious motivations. You called it an oversimplification, but I disagree, and I attempted to illustrate that by showing how there are very few (or none at all? I wish Conan would have written more than 'uh') examples of "capitalist terrorism" or "atheist terrorism".

yes, there are other evils committed in the name of other ideals. All of it is part of one big, complex, ugly equation. However, once you remove religion from one side of the equation, you also remove religious terrorism from the other side.

I think it's a little more than ridiculous that people place so much emphasis on the negative parts of the Quran as though all of the muslims who read it follow every single scripture literally, while simultaneously knowing that all Christians who read the Bible don't sacrifice their finest lambs or forbid women from speaking in church or think that homosexuals should be stoned to death...

It should be pretty simple to understand that the bible and the Quran are two books filled with all kinds of crap, some of it vile, most of it just absolutely stupid... but it's more guided to blame the people with an agenda that are using the book to manipulate others into carrying out their goals. Burning either book accomplishes absolutely nothing other than letting everyone know you're dumb enough to think it's going to swing things your way, and pissing off the people who place value in it.
All at the same time.
Quite an achievement.... It's like shitting on yourself in pre-school because you don't like the other kids.

I seriously think this is the most well-written post I've ever seen in MB.

It's completely an oversimplification to say the issue is religion. Islam has been around for over a thousand years. It's one of the largest religions in the world. If it was true that the duty of all Muslims was to take over the world and kill all infidels, I can guarantee that over a billion people could make a much bigger boom then is currently being made. The West has been pissing on the Middle East for years and years. We treat the region like an oil well. We put Israel there and continue to support Israel - despite the fact they're no more moral then al-Qaeda. How can you argue things like this aren't major factors in this conflict? It's ignorant to say they're not and continue to point your finger at the Qu'ran.

That's operating under the assumption, like Dali said, that all muslims are extremists. Of course they are not. MOST people are rational and don't take religious scripture literally.

Whoa, you just widened the scope of this argument quite a bit more than what was initially understood.

I'm aware, and the point I was trying to make by stating that, is that Islam is not centered around killing infidels. If it was, Muslims couldn't just sort of skim over it as so many religious people do to their respective holy texts.

I was under the assumption that the discussion was about terrorism in the Middle East as a whole. Zaqarbal was claiming that it comes from the Qu'ran - which, as you can tell, I disagree with.

Oh, no, I hadn't read your entire argument with catman, so I had assumed you were talking about specific "terrorist" activities such as 9/11 and the Quran burning. My baad
