Israeli military storms aid ship headed for Gaza, at least nine activists dead

BBC News - Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

So this is pretty big news, at least around here. What are your thoughts on the subject? Was Israel in the wrong, and if so, what should the rest of the world do about it?

right-track 05-31-2010 02:51 PM

Was it even necessary to board the ship?
If Israel suspected there were arms onboard, other than aid, then wouldn't it have been better to simply turn the ship around?

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 05-31-2010 02:58 PM

yes, they were in the wrong. as they so consistently are.

the state of israel should not exist in its current form.

technically it's an act of war. hoping cooler heads prevail at the UN when they discuss what really happened though i really don't see how Israel can justify boarding a humanitarian vessel via helicopter in the middle of the night in international waters. the people on the boats had every right to defend themselves from an unprovoked act of aggression.

besides it's not like Israel couldn't search the boats as soon as they docked like they normally do. plus if the convoy 'was' carrying weapons why did everyone resorts to stick and knives to fight back some of the most highly trained soldiers on the planet? why are there no reports of any shots being fired at the helicopter? shots fired on the bridge of a boat seem sensible considering the situation, though it's very hard to say if it was a soldier, one of their weapons in a resisting hand or an illegal weapon.

plus it's not like Turkey isn't a NATO country and part of the UN. this wasn't some unnamed pirate ship with a humanitarian front.

Im pro Israel, but that was unnecessary..

agreed, but what was unnessisary was the attack against the Isrealis.

Quote:

"Unfortunately this group were dead-set on confrontation," Isreali government spokesman Mark Regev told the BBC. "Live fire was used against our forces. They initiated the violence, that's 100% clear," he said.

yeah, i'm sure an aid vessel was "dead-set on confrontation." bull ****.

not that a state founded on the basis of existing exclusively for a specific religious/ethnic group doesn't fully deserve to be violently removed.

are you nuts? did you not check out the clips? how is a group being boarded via helicopter in the middle of the ocean at 4am considered the attacker by anyone besides those trying to shift blame?:usehead:

would live fire have actually taken place had armed soldiers not illegally boarded the vessels while carrying arms?

again, if these boats were supposedly potentially carrying weapons, why weren't they actually used? why are the people on board clearly using sticks until a soldier has his weapon removed?

"War, children, its just a shot away".

Already have Iraq & Afgan to worry about, everybody else might as well join in total world war...lol, I really just dont have an answer.
I wonder if anybody does?
The present situation also reminds of a few lines that are from a 'Steely Dan' song.

"I heard it was you, talking about a world where all is free, it just couldnt be, and 'Only A Fool Would Say That'.

it's hardly a total world war. the ongoing struggle comes up every 2-3 years whenever one side starts feeling too neglected by the international community or feels that they're being too lenient to the other. a bunch of demands... err requests... will come out in a few days, heads will be patted, and business will go back to normal.

funny how virtually no one pays attention when North Korea pulls this **** though....
