there is no sound reason to believe a technologically advanced species is also one which features a moral system in which our existence as a species is respected

perhaps they would find it morally preferential to destroy us to protect our planet (assuming they have morals at all)

that said, if they do have morals, chances are they are not global. look at our species - there is no single moral system. there is really no way to guess how aliens would treat us upon contact. the safest option therefore is to try and be alone as long as possible. which we've not had a problem with so far

Believing another intelligent civilization millions upon millions of light-years away would come all the way to our planet simply to destroy us is completely ludicrous to me. A civilization that intelligent and advance would have no need for violence and would almost certainly not have someone so reckless and barbarian represent their existence. Instead I imagine they are looking for other intelligent life to learn from one another. Acknowledging that we are not alone in this vast and seemingly endless universe seems much more important that conquering at this point.

Just because aliens have no use for violence among themselves doesn't mean they would have mercy on those they deem inferior.

But I wouldn't worry, the odds of an alien civilization coming into contact with us during any of our lifetimes is extremely dim.

You mean to tell me you actually believe they are willingly to travel such great distances and exhaust so many resources just to not have mercy on those inferior to them? I would imagine locating the biggest and most important discovery of anybody's generation would be a celebration and not an apocalypse.

Um, do we, as humans, have mercy on species inferior to us?
Of course we ****ing don't. We enslaved and killed people without weapons. We fight over natural resources that we should be sharing. We eat animals that are smaller and weaker then us and kill insects because they're annoying. If aliens are like us, they'll kill us if they want something.
Considering everything, I have nothing to worry about and even if I did, quick, painless deaths that kill large portions of the population at a time are far cheaper and less messy then executions. So I won't even know until a second beforehand and everybody else I know will be dead. Its cool.

Those who kill another human are those whom are unfit in some way or another. Whether it be psychically, psychologically, or morally and so they hardly represent every one of us. These people wouldn't govern a civilization with the sufficient power brain to develop space crafts and telecommunication devices that could travel the light-years warrant to cause bodily harm to another civilization.

The resources needed to travel and then destroy a civilization are far too vast and irreplaceable for someone looking to "kill annoyances".

What if their home planet was on the verge of collapse and they needed a new one or their entire species would be gone? You think humans would politely move over to accommodate an entire alien race along the side of us? Not only that, but there probably wouldn't be enough room or resources. So the more intelligent, advanced species is going to be smart enough (not necessarily immoral enough) to decide whether he wants his species to survive or not... this could end up an extermination. By either side. At the very least, it would be war.
