And didn't Mount Ruapehu erupt in around 2007? I remember seeing it when I was driving through the Taupo volcanic zone... that volcano is badass.

Edit: the Pink and White Terraces story is unbelievable, I also went and visited the 'buried village.' That whole area of New Zealand is just amazing... Rotorua especially.

The most it's affected me is it stopping my flatmate flying back from Thailand.

Last time one of them wanted to come back from home (Russia) was in the snow we had over here, and his luggage was delayed for a week and had stuff missing from it.

I don't know the actual date (1800's) but the last time this volcano erupted it spewed ash out for months!

My aunt and uncle are over in California for holiday and they were set to leave on Saturday but the airlines are saying the earliest they could get them a flight would be on the 27th. I think that's more of a worst case scenario thing, but in the meantime they're nearly broke and stuck in San Francisco for up to another week.

During my weekend visit in SF I met a lot of British tourists who were stuck and in similar situations, but I also heard that people are being asked to keep their receipts so there may be the possibility of some kind of reimbursement. I think that some of the major cities should start doing some kind of charity soup kitchen or something because after awhile eating out gets very expensive and especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, so that would be a very kind act if places like the US and Canada were to step in and help alleviate some of the worries.

According to NBC the airlines are losing 200 million dollars a day because of this so there's some real nasty financial consequences for this too which could hinder the recession recovery process. It really is amazing how one little volcanic eruption could reek so much havoc on people's lives. I tell you, I'm really happy not to be in any of their shoes right now.

My mom's cousin from England is supposed to come over here the first week in May. Hope everything's okay by then.

Doesn't Iceland have a larger super volcano , like the ring of fire in the midwestern U.S?

I wanted to tear my teeth out. I didn't know what I wanted to do. And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it. I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that.

Read the thread's first post perhaps?

It seems likely that the volcano Katla will erupt as well which is much larger according to the news.

It'll probably calm down soon, tendencies pointing to that have been seen. Still, this only goes to show how fragile society is. The lives of millions of people was interrupted because of a little ash.
