How about this. Should there even be a pope? The whole idea seems dated and unnecessary.

so long as people choose to look outward for answers to their internal strife their will be religion and so long as there is religion there will be a pope.

Yes, he should step down. It's easy for me to say that though because the existence of such a position at all seems ridiculous. Not removing that priest in Germany years ago, who was said to be likely to molest kids again and then did, is inexcusable.
