Mmmm... the only reason people find sceintology ridiculous is BECAUSE the book it's based on wasn't written until the 80's...

I haven't actually read anything from the book of scientology, though I have heard some of its tenets, but it can't be any more ridiculous than Noah's Ark or Jonah and the giant fish. The difference is, the Bible has the honor of being thousands of years old.

Scientology began in 1954. Fortunately, there was a time when journalists did their job properly, so already in the 60's people knew what Scientology really is.
