I would love to be a sharpshooter! I would enjoy scoping in on a pirate or two.

What boggles my mind is the mere fact that all these ships are being taken hostage by these Somali Pirates and the ships aren't armed? WTF is up with that? Dont Cargo ships have armed staff?

I think the reason they aren't armed is because the various ports they're stopping at don't necessarily want a bunch of foreign sailors with guns cruising into their harbor and may in fact have laws prohibiting such a thing. It's pretty understandable really but it certainly does leave them vulnerable when there are pirates around.

That should be changed. We have trade agreements with most of these countries along with arms agreements. Protection of a vessel and its' cargo should become a prime concern, don't you think?

And why would any ship, especially knowing there is a pirate crisis in those waters, even navigate that area? I know there are shipping lanes and such, but shouldn't they be escorted by armed protection?

they should hire american soldiers to protect incoming shipments, sort of like an air marshall.

It's easy to just say "that should be changed" but the question is how? Most countries are more concerned with protecting their borders and harbors than with protecting foreign ships. It's kind of a tough sell telling a country like China or India that armed foreign sailors are going to start arriving in their ports, especially considering what just happened in India a few months ago.

It's also easy to just say "steer around where the pirates are" but I'm sure if it were that simple that's exactly what all these ships would be doing.

And so the debate begins...

How true. Catch 22. I am sure some kind of further military action will take place. Although, there is one flaw what you are saying, the hijackings are not happening in Chinese or Indian waters. And the hijackings are not happening in a port either , SOOOoooooo it would be safe to assume that vessel escorts are in the making
