Not at all. If it's necessary for a woman to work in order support a family then there is absolutely no problem. In the rare circumstance that a woman chooses to work when she doesn't need to (i.e. when she has a working man) at the expense of her children, it rubs me the wrong way.

The problem with this, in this day, is the economy. I don't know about the rest of the world, but in America average wage has gone down for decades despite the productivity rising. This has lead most families to be forced to have both parents working, when thirty years ago one person could sustain a healthy houshold on his/her salary. It's led to a fuckton of other problems like the family unit disolving blah blah blah.

well you weren't, but if you ask me, what determines someones manhood shouldn't be based on assigning other genders roles. Its like that old deconstructionist argument; once you call an object by a name, you can no longer call other things that aren't exactly the same but the same label.

i.e. defining a man should not limit what a woman can do, be, or be seen as.

The men I've known in my life that I would say are the most masculine, and therefore idolized in my eyes have a few consistent traits.

1. Silence through struggle: My grandfather raised 4 kids, two that weren't his and worked three jobs so he could support them all. He didn't go back to school to get his G.E.D. until he was 40 because he did what he had to do. He like so many of his time never complained. Can only men do this? no. It is however something you tend to find more of in men, to shrinking degrees because of the "me, me, me" culture.

2. Steadfast. Men tend to be overly arrogant when their young. I think its an effect of testosterone. But by the time you're 30, you ought to have an idea of who you are and where you stand. Saying you made a mistake is fine. But changing with the wind to appease or to placate is not a trait traditionally defined with "man." This occasionally crosses over to "stubborn" or "ignorant" but don't confuse...

"we're doing this because I said so"

and

"no thanks, that's just not me."

The formers an ass, the latter as masculine trait.

3. Self-reliance. This one is riding the border here but it is what it is. Men, for better or worse, tend to find a virtue in handling things alone, not because they don't need anyone's help per say but because independence is always an option they should have. They tend to push this out on to their children and the like. Often confused with a lack of emotional concern, self-reliance tends to be the most redeeming of all lessons learned.

Again this is just how I see things. I'm sure some soc.101 moron is going to come in here with a soap box and some bumper sticker arguments but thats my opinion.

Then I'll have to come to terms with my slight sexism and just hope my wife doesn't demand that she has a full-time job (if I ever get one)

Generally speaking it does seem to be a trendy occurrence amongst teenagers involved in that whole emo/goth thing but I think that more has to do with those cultures being open to that idea and teenagers being horny. Some of them (who actually aren't) just grow out of it in a few years. I wish all facets of culture were open to sexuality or stopped being so definitive about it.

Biological imperative - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We are intelligent beings capable of moral arguments and contemplation. I think in many ways we've grown past our biology and are no longer (at least in terms of what we do) completely defined by our genes. It isn't necessary for the woman to be the homemaker/children-raiser anymore and there's no guarantees that she will be better at it then the father. It really all depends on the people involved - not their biology.

I prolly look like a big ol' sexist now, lol
I absolutely disagree. For one you are implying that all woman want a family and two, just because we have a biological clock and do have children this does not mean we should have to look after children/family solely.

I am the total opposite of the women that were born and wed to have babies. I am extremely independent and the thought of having children makes me retch. I definitely am not ruling out children in the future, but I will be having a damn good career first and during if it does occur.

I know humans are designed to reproduce, like animals, but we have intelligent brains and it makes us distinct from other species. Yes some of us are meant to just keep the population going, survival of the fittest etc, but the most important thing is that we keep moving forward with science and technology, to create better futures for generations ahead.

I think the gender roles are absolute rubbish, as women have made incredible progress in all different fields of work, especially science and labour. Men now days do such activities as ballet, fashion design, and cooking. It is the 21st century, and I think because we still have the older generations still alive and kicking with their old fashion values, its hard to completely dissociate from these idealistic roles.

Who knows what roles people will be taking 100 years from now?

So now you're saying that men are allowed to go out and screw every woman with open legs? That's really practical. The world isn't populated enough as it is. And now men cheating is exceptable? You have a seriously backwards view on the world today. Why don't you go join the cavemen as you'd fit right in.
