I don't really think that gender roles are societally enforced, seeing as every animal species on the planet has two genders that share large amounts of characteristics with humans, such as a mother being protective of her children. So the desire for women to have children and be a typical housemother has a lot to do with thousands of years of genetics and shit. With men it's basically the same, with racial memories of competition to survive and the need to dominate their "tribes" being passed on from generation to generation.
