Its not all about reading to them before they go to bed or taking them to the playground on the weekends.. There is a ton more to do than that. Yes that makes sense (not), because during this credit crunch where more than ever both parents to need to work to manage being able to live, how the hell can they afford to drop a job and take care of the kids? I think it's one less stress to drop them off at daycare where they learn very important skills such as social interaction, discipline, and how to treat other kids.

If you have problems with your f-ing credit its not because of your kids its because you would rather have a new designer purse(piss poor with money).. Its only obvious your worried about appearance via your avatar... You are a complete media tool..

Anyway, moving on, daycare is definitely useful, I loved daycare so much I screamed and cried every day dad picked me up. But in another sense, the after daycare relationship must be maintained, because reading to children before bed is absolutely key. I jumped 3-4 reading levels right through primary school.

When considering gender roles, I have to say from what I've seen, some men really don't take a big role in taking care of children. For those who are bread winners they seem to think that's where their contribution ends. Does anyone else get this impression?

I do, and it's understandable. If the dad is the breadwinner and the mom is unemployed (say she's in maternity leave) then the responsibility should fall to the woman. Not fully, of course, but if there was a percentage then say the woman gets 80% of the responsibility, especially if the dad is working a job that demands a lot of hours in a day.

Thing is, it's the same if the woman was the breadwinner, or should be, at least. That instance is rare, however, because the woman can go on maternity leave while the dad can't (correct me if I'm wrong). But even if a couple can go on maternity leave, the woman has to breastfeed the child, which means that if there's ever a point where the mom and dad must be separated, then the mother has to take care of the child because she's the source of the child's food, at least for the first little while.

So it's understandable if the dad is the breadwinner and the mom has to stay at home. For the first few years, she almost doesn't have a choice. I have a friend who has a baby now and her boyfriend is the one who works while she stays home all day and looks after the child, making sure that she's okay and fed and whatnot. It's very demanding.
