I was losing my faith in humanity a little, but the last few posts have restored some of it. It's nice to see some people get it.

I tried to join in Earth Hour, but the other peeps in my house wouldn't have it.
I've been getting email reminders about it for the last 6 months it seems, and was all psyched too...

Never even heard of it lol but I do my bit anyhow- recycle, no car, energy light bulbs, double glazing, all electrics turned off at night so I will console myself with that.

I think that when I eventually settle down with a home I would like to run power from a solar source, or even wind.
I also think it would be cool to see if everyone could go without water on for an hour. I know a lot of people say there is not a lot one person can do to improve the running of this planet but if more and more people turned off unused lights, etc etc it would most certain make a difference. However it's also interesting how us 'local' people are always encouraged to do this when there are big industries and companies pumping power without a care. When are they going to be forced to take head? Carbon tax could be an answer, or just consideration of this planet.

It's a nice symbolic gesture, it does put energy conservation into people's thoughts that day. Right there, however, is where I believe it ends. The way I see it, unless you're already careful about conserving energy, earth hour isn't going to matter to you one way or another. The vast majority of people will probably turn their TVs off, turn the lights off, and wait for an hour. Then once it's over, the TV will be back on, all the lights in the house on, they'll probably start up the washing machine and fire up the laptop so they have something to amuse themselves with during the commercial breaks. Yeah it's a nice gesture, but I high doubt it really makes any difference whatsoever to the majority of people's daily habits.
