I think hand spanking is necessary especially if they do something that you tell them not to do that was to protect them from harm. Hand spanking on the bottom is fine and only when they are really young from like say 2 to 4. I don't think kids should be spanked past 4.

Last time I spanked my daughter was when she was maybe 7. Her and her younger brother (around 2-ish) were outside having ice cream on the picnic table. He was standing on it while she was sitting. I guess he was bugging her because she gave him a shove. For a split second he was teetering on the edge and she reached up and gave him another shove so he'd fall off. He was crying but ok - could have easily busted and arm or dislocated a shoulder.
That was so over the top bad that she got a few whacks and was sent to her room. By dinnertime everything was fine and she kept apologizing to Mike. FTR: I was beaten regularly as a kid. Like pretty badly in some really nasty ways. And you can attest to how perfectly I survived it.

I agree. We should be able to hit retards. How else are you gonna keep them from running out into the street?

I can link you to the psychology studies but it has something to do with kids before four not having developed something in their brains that responds to consequences. Also kids in their terrible 2s will push their boundaries and test to see what they can and can't get away with. If you just talk to them and try to reason with them they don't have the capacity to understand wtf is going on. The light tap on their butt is there for reinforcement.

For those who bother to check out the meta study, it says that even for the usually intended purpose of correcting behaviour, spanking is ineffective. Hence, even if there were no negative consequences from spanking (which there are), there would be better ways to correct behaviour.
Somewhat related to the effectiveness of spanking; when spanking proves ineffective, a normal counter-measure from parents is to try and increase the intensity of the spanking. This obviously leads to more violence (and related consequences), but not necessarily better results (behaviour correction). The assumption that kids can't be reasoned with seems assumptive and lazy. Is that really true (feel free to link to studies)? And even if it is true, which I'm sceptical about, does it mean you're left with violence as the only option? I think not. Although Chula formulates this argument in a somewhat different way which is hard to disagree with, the argument that "I was beat and turned out fine" is fallacious. You can't know how you would've turned out if you were subjected to a different upbringing and you may carry scars that you are not aware of.
