I didn't say you shouldn't punish/discipline them - in fact in order to raise them so they grow up to be respectful/humble you need to do both. I was just criticizing the methodology of the punishments advocated by many in this thread.

I think that it is a very difficult situation to say whether physical discipline is okay or not. When you're under a lot of pressure with a morgage, busy job and have children it's hard to keep tabs of how their behaviour is changing when you don't see them. When you've had a hard day at work, you've got to find a lot of extra energy stores to keep your kids on track and behaving appropriately. So you're not necessarily going to just put them in a corner every 5 minutes until they get it, as time is limited. So if you do give them a light smack it puts them in their place far quicker. But that doesn't mean I agree with it. I'm concluding that everyone is different and no one finds looking after children a piece of cake.

Well I jokingly said it was acceptable earlier, and I asked my parents if they were physically disciplined...and they weren't. Same with my dad's parents, they were not physically disciplined and they turned out normal. I haven't been disciplined either, I turned out okay (I think). Obviously these are only isolated incidents, but parents shouldn't have a right to hit their child anyways.

How would you feel if a grown man spanked your butt?
