And then there's no welfare and we have another problem.

I think welfare needs reform but deletion, no way.

Why is that a problem. Never has it been proven that welfare helps those who are unable to get jobs, get jobs. We should put it into programs that educate those people and help them survive in the real world. Otherwise it's just throwing money in a blender.

Do you have anything to back up your claim that Welfare is just "throwing money in the blender" and doesn't benefit anyone?

Anyways sleepy jack here ya go, even though you're going to dismiss it:

In 1994, 27 million people used food stamps costing the federal government 24 billion dollars. Are you telling me that 27 million people cannot find jobs? No screw that. I have already held TWO full time jobs in 20 years of living, so don't tell me it's hard to find a job (I quit for school and other reasons.). I made about a combined $10,000 in about 6 months of work. That comes out to about $20,000 per year right out of high school. You can in fact live off of that, not comfortably though. Solution? Pull some people together and work together. Get roomates, split rent. Use public transportation. It's not hard, because if you REALLY want a job, you'll find one.

This post shows an incredible amount of ignorance on your part. Don't use fourteen year old statistics to prove your point especially when the economic and job situation is radically different nowadays. For one there's the cost difference which is something you're not looking at. Universal Health Care is going to cost roughly a hundred and forty billion dollars. It's not going to be cheap and you can't simply switch costs from one things to another and think they're it'll even out, it's not that simple.

As far as the job market comment goes...it just shows once again you're being incredibly ignorant. Your average family isn't going to be able to roommate with other families comfortably and they shouldn't have to. Also your numbers are off, twenty-seven million people on food stamps doesn't mean twenty-seven million people are unemployed it just means twenty-seven million can't afford to pay for food. But that was fourteen years ago.

I don't think you're aware how fragile the economy and employment climate is right now. Let's look at something recent, like the auto industry problem. Do you realize if they fail they're going to lose 240,000 workers right there? And when you add in everyone tied up to it through dealers, the suppliers, etc. 2.3 million Americans are estimated to be jobless. That's one small facet of American industry and you'd tell all these people to ride a bus? Move in together? Stop being lazy? And do you think all those mechanics who have spent over twenty years as a mechanic are going to be able to move into an equal paying job afterwards? Your average Joe who became a mechanic out of college and hasn't done anything else would be lucky if he got a job as Janitor and that won't pay the same and you're just going to tell him to suck it up? How do you expect him to live and feed his family? There's a certain point when the government needs to take care of it's people. You can't just let them starve on the streets.

I didn't literally mean that every family should move in together. I was showing that you can always find a way to get by. Jobs are out there, and people ARE hiring. You just have to be willing to put forth an effort. I'd like you to tell me why welfare is a good thing. All it does is keep people exactly where they are. It doesn't help them improve their life. The majority of people on welfare stay on welfare. So we can't let our people starve on the streets but we CAN trap them in an extremely low quality state of living with no incentive to improve their lives? Yeah, great system.

I can guarantee you there aren't two million jobs waiting out there that can support every single family in America that could be affected by that one industry collapsing. You're being an idiot in saying there is and these people just aren't looking and you have an incredibly biased view about Welfare. Welfare does give you the chance to step up and you don't have to look far to see that. Saying there's no incentive to be successful...that's just stupid. I don't deny there's problems with Welfare but the idea is good and it's good we have it getting rid of it would mean sending Americans to the streets and not allowing them a chance or even giving them a leg up. Welfare is a great thing, it gives people a chance just because you're a pessimist doesn't mean everyone else is. So I suggest you find a new argument that doesn't revolve around you being a preachy snob and telling everyone that's unemployed to get off their asses. Right now, in our economic climate, there isn't an incredibly amount of opportunity and if things keep going the way they are, they'll be even less. Besides, since you have such moral objections to Welfare how you can like Universal Health Care?

I grew up on welfare. It allowed me enough money to get my stuff together after high school and become self employed. There was a brief period of time where I was unemployed trying to become self motivated. Then it hit me when I recieved my welfare money that I could use it to clean up my image a bit and go about selling myself with what I knew how to do best. Now I work my own hours typing in data for magezine and brochure orders. If not for welfare I'd probably be working 9-5 flipping burgers.
