The standard cosmological argument for the existence of God goes something like this:
The world is effectively, a giant causal chain. God (if we are to anthropomorphise this being) positions himself outside of the chain, he is the prime-mover-unmoved. God sets of this chain of cause and effect while he has no cause. The problem I have with this argument is that although it is logically fine, the prime-mover-unmoved that we have labelled God could be easily replaced by any other entity - there are many schools of thought/religions that have monistic philosophies, meaning that at the end of it all, there is the ONE. In the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's philosophy for example, the will is the most basic entity and we are all but manifestations of will. Although this criticism is unable to disprove the existence of God, it should have done enough to establish reasonable doubt. The Jesuit Priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin published a book entitiled The Phenomenon of Man. It conveys an extremely interesting theory that combines Christian morals within a framework that feeds off Darwinist evolution theory. I highly recommend it to those that are interested. And here ends my rant... Sorry but I just want to make 15 posts so I could link videos! |
