Roughly summed up, I believe people get defensive about stuff they care about. It's a simple, plausible explanation which explains not just why some people may get angry in discussions about religion, but also about cats, cookery or what have you.

That's a nice hypothesis, but for argument's sake, you don't actually know if this is true. At least not for all buddhists.
