Baltimore's school system has been a joke for a long time now. Teachers are overwhelmed. Some students do manage to escape and go to college, but they're very few and they have to overcome so many obstacles. It's sad because Maryland is well above average overall and if you take away Baltimore, it might be close to number one.

Baltimore is notorious.

They can’t keep teachers there. To teach there you have to be willing to let yourself be threatened and verbally accosted all day every day. The teachers can’t do **** about it. If you did what it took to control your class you’d go to jail. Mothers with reasonably decently behaved kids often choose not to send them to school because the environment is so toxic. They round them up during the early year counts then ignore their absences until the state mandated tests. They only send truancy officers out at those times. The kids end up with PTSD and depression and ****.

I live in Baltimore so it kind of hit a nerve. The city is combined with poor people, mostly African-American, who see a life of hopelessness. Then you have who I not so affectionately call the yuppies. They pretty much want to gentrify the city for their own uses. And, of course, there is the mistrust of the cops which is what led to the riots a couple years ago. I don't know what the solution would be ultimately. Maybe the leaders (and Baltimore has some fantastic community leaders) can start with the upcoming generation. It's probably already too late for the present one.


One good thing. If you think this mayor is bad (not saying she is by the way- she's been in less than a year), you should have seen the two that preceded her.

The white liberal policy of inclusion was the final nail in the coffin. You can’t run a school in Baltimore like in you do in a white suburb.
