Apple - you've outdone yourself again. Just when we thought you'd exhausted every possible means of screwing the buying public... you pull this.
Forbes reported today that the iPhone 7 will officially abandon the perfectly good global standard for a headphone jack in place of their proprietary lightning connector. Now Apple can charge all headphone makers licensing fees for use of their connector. Beats are all now selling Lightning headphones, heavily promoted in Apple stores, as well as Audeze’s $799.95 EL-8 Titanium headphones. Lightning is being positioned as the "high quality" option... ignoring the fact that the standard 50 cent audio that the rest of the planet uses delivers the SAME EXACT audio signal. And BETTER STILL, Forbes notes, Apple customers will need to think twice about leaving the Mac OS/iOS ecosystem if it entails them investing in a new pair of premium headphones. **** you, Apple. I'm putting coal in your stocking... with a Lightning port.

I use two iPods, and I prefer Mac when working on Adobe, but other than that I'll never buy a smartphone (Apple or not) or Apple products outside of those.

The recent Walkman releases are indeed interesting bits of tech. I used a 30GB flash Creative Zen X-Fi with an additional 128GB of expandable SD storage for years until I discovered the miracle of a Linux media server and unlimited, unthrottled data. For the last several years I've used my Android smartphone to access several TBs of my content. discographic and cinematic archives abound, on demand and free. I've repeatedly considered investing in a Dragonfly or similar portable DAC and headphone amplifier, but honestly the cell is sufficient to power my Sennheisers when I'm in the wild, and at home I've got a proper hi-fi system so I haven't really seen the need. Godd*mn right, he was.

Sorry for the double-post, but this news story is nightmarishly dystopian and really should be shared.
ACLU.org and antimedia.org have both published articles about China's new social media game. The "game" measures citizens' obedience to the Party. Run by the largest social networking and e-commerce sites in the country in cooperation with the goverment, all users' online purchases and posts add to or subtract from their score. And once the game becomes mandatory in 2020, their score is planned to have real-world consequences like access to travel papers, loans, slower internet speeds, and employment. Worst of all, your score is dragged down if you remain friends with low-scoring individuals. The game self-perpetuates social ostracization and obedience to authority. Extra Credits posted this video summarizing the nation's new credit system.
