So why is his sentence and imprisonment so unrealistically draconian? You'd think he had murdered a thousand people and was an actual cannibal! I agree it's cruel and unusual to have no company at all, not even a pet, and furniture made of cardboard? What are they afraid of: that he'll kill the rest of the prison's inmates? I'd let him do it. ****ing unbelievable. Not at all what I expected when I read the story. What makes him so "dangerous" that they can visit such unprecedented punishment on him?
why not just kill his ass?

Don't say it's cause you are against the death penalty after you just signed off on letting him murder other prisoners lol

Not really a problem. If that was the state of play, he killed people so let him die. Not necessarily against the DP, just I don't see that it serves any real purpose other than revenge. Certainly doesn't dissuade people from murdering. Look at how it was back in only Victorian times, when almost everything from stealing bread to murder was a hanging offence; didn't stop anyone.

My point is, in the current climate with no DP, imprison him, fine. But why are such incredibly unique and draconian measures believed necessary for a guy who, when it comes down to it, surely is no worse than any other murderer they have there? What makes him worthy of this almost hysteric reaction by the authorities?

I assumed it was cause they couldn't prevent him from killing other inmates as you alluded to with your post... I dunno what the justice system is like there but in American prisons they have certain people on 23 hr lockdown with basically no direct interaction with other inmates....

Oh I think our system is a lot more "humane", god help us. But that's not the point. The article said "he will never be released". Why? How is he different to other killers, who will be allowed to seek parole? Why is he in this bloody plastic cage thing and without any company, not even a pet? Why are they making him out to be a Hannibal Lecter type who will kill indiscriminately if he gets out? He's a killer, sure, but no worse than any other. I don't understand the unbelievable lengths they're going to, as if they had the Devil himself incarcerated. It's not Texas and he's not black. I mean, come on! Why is he seen as so much more dangerous than other men in that prison who have surely committed worse, and more, murders?

Just skimming through this article I'm seeing plenty of reasons for him to be under maximum security and 23 hr lockdown... Namely the fact that he can't seem to stop murdering other inmates and not only that the murders are incredibly graphic and violent... So yeah i dunno about the glass cage but letting him into contact with other inmates would actually be pretty irresponsible and not at all "humane" imo...

Nah, the article is totally sensationalist and disingenuous (duh) calling him "The Cannibal of Toxteth", which immediately makes you think oh man this guy eats people! **** he does. Someone just gave him that name because of the similarity of the method of murder of one of the inmates to that of the SOTL. That's pure bollocks.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be in prison, but from what I read, the only person he killed "outside" was one guy who was bragging about assaulting a kid. I'm not going to defend what he did or why he did it, but it seems that affected him and once inside he probably heard stories of what the other inmates did and took what he saw as appropriate action.

Of course it wasn't. Murder is never - almost never - excusable. But the point I'm making - and again you appear to be ignoring it as you have yet to respond to it - is that there are murderers and rapists and god knows what-all in that prison, people far worse than him, and yet he's being singled out. I'm not saying there's not a reason for keeping him in the cage - if that's for the safety of other inmates, so be it. But why is he "never to be released"? Do they worry he'll go after inmates who have, on the outside? And given that he is totally alone why is he being refused the budgie? He has demonstrated no cruelty towards animals, so far as I can see, and surely, where other prisoners probably have TV and books and proper furniture, he should be made even the tiniest bit comfortable, considering the crime that landed him where he is was against someone who was a scumbag already?

And no, before you go off on one, I'm NOT excusing it, but I am pointing out that he didn't just start murdering people for no reason, as surely many of the others in there did.
