The 41 mass killings were the most in a single year since the AP/USA TODAY and Northeastern database began tracking such events in 2006, but other research going back to the 1970s shows no other year with as many mass slayings. The second-most killings in a year before 2019 was 38 in 2006.
USA USA USA

Q: Why does America have so many mass murders?
A: Because too many people hate everything about this ****ing place.
Q: Why do they hate it so much?
A: Because in one way or another they’re chronically abused and treated like trash.
Q: Don’t other countries have large numbers of disgruntled people?
A: Yes but America is the worst.
Q: Even worse than China and Sudan?
A: It’s about the same.
Q: That’s hyperbolic and ridiculous!
A: The proof is in the pudding.

The big budget action movies started getting really boring and Americans solve problems by taking them into their own hands.

It’s the PG13 compromise that’s ruined this bitch

I feel like half the shooters we have might have been serial killers if they just had a bit more ambition

But being a serial killer is hard work

Being a shooter is the easy way to wreak havoc

I think they’re entirely different animals

I think a more accurate interpretation would be that they might have been spree killers if they were a bit more deranged and separated from reality, but the example set by previous mass shooters gives them something to strive for they wouldn't have thought possible before with limited imagination and motivation, and the increasing alienation of modern society gives them that boost in nihilism they need to take the plunge.

I'm speaking subjectively oblviously... I have no idea

But what was the last great serial killer that really caught everyone's attention? The DC snipers? Seems like most of the big names are from the past. Bundy. Dahmer, Gacy, etc.

Yet almost all the major mass shooters are post Columbine. You had your odd case like the guy in the Texas watchtower. But it wasn't the thing back then.

The thing holding back actual serial killers now is that it's just so much harder to get away with longterm secretive murder given modern police capabilities that they don't get away with it long enough to gain the notoriety of a Bundy or a Gacy. But mass or spree killers have the advantage of doing their thing in short amounts of time where a concerted investigation doesn't have the time to go into motion before a large number of people are already dead.

I mean one of the most prolific serial killers ever was a guy in the Soviet Union where the police actively suppressed information about his crimes because authorities didn't want to give the impression that something like that was even happening let alone that they couldn't catch the culprit.
