I don't think that Southern protestants are afraid of Harry Potter though, it's not like it has any black characters.

I actually met quite a few in the school district here. Only a couple who I heard actually say it but lots of people think like that down here.

my brother in NC had a friend growing up who wasn't allowed to read it

Witchcraft is expressedly forbidden in the Bible. It has the same barbaric penalty as homosexuality. I shudder to think of what they did with gay witches.
