The taboo came from the fact that they thought their allegiance was towards the church rather than the country. It's the reason why Irish people faced discrimination early on. Their propaganda isn't much different from yours.

Can you back up the idea behind that analogy in relation to catholicism versus other sects of christianity with evidence instead of the assumption that I don't know anything about religion because of my atheism?

It's really not. You're holding them accountable for their religion over the belief that they're supporting something that they aren't.

It comes more from the fact that you don't care about either, so to you they're pretty much the same thing. To you the differences are too insignificant to matter.

Anecdotal experience tells me athiests know more about religion than the religious. Which makes sense considering how ****ing ridiculous religion is.
