Incidentally Walter Cronkite referred to Daley's musclemen (all white) at the Chicago Convention as thugs when they were roughing up Dan Rather. I don't see any racial connotations with the term at all.

This. Well, well, well before black culture appropriated the word and made it theirs ("Thug Life"? Gimme a beak! No, it's not misspelled: I want to be a Hawk too!) we had thugs everywhere. It was, and is, just a collective description of any band of louts or hard men, what we used to call "hard-chaws" or "bowsies" or "hardos". Still is, to me.
