People say that "free" college for everyone in the U.S. isn't plausible [and I know that it doesn't actually mean "free," but funded by tax-payers], but when virtually ANYONE can get a student loan, and the debt can so easily be written off, or bought and paid for pennies on the dollar, the end result is nearly the same. Why not just cut out the middle man bullshit?
Why not just encourage kids to stop thinking that college always has to be the next step? Or that college isn't a place to "find yourself" when it costs 20,000 USD a year to go there? Why not just be happy if your kid just wants to get a job instead of "the job". I don't know. Just an idea. I think far too many go to colleges and universities without having a clue of what they want to do and think that it is the university's responsiblility to give them purpose in life. Or that far too many really think that livng by other people's standards are more important than building up your own.

If you want to go to college for free if you are American, head on over to Germany I guess. It used to be the same in Sweden but that was changed when people started to see that the system was being abused.

I blame the education system. Kids aren't given any real direction, especially if they come from dysfunctional households. Taught the basics, but aren't really mentored. So all kids hear their whole lives is "go to college and you'll figure it out" when maybe it would be a better idea to try interning / exploring potential careers in high school so you can spare yourself university unless it is absolutely critical.

Most high school teachers are thinking along those lines but you can’t do anything when the entire system is dysfunctional. You can’t teach the basics, you can’t mentor, you can’t teach a trade. I’m talking about the school to prison pipeline, though. I think this discussion is more about middle class kids going to college only to find themselves in debt and no way back into the middle class they were raised in. Solution: Take a few trillion out of the hidden pentagon budget. Provide health care inluding MENTAL health care for everyone. Provide nutritious food and quality health care in schools. Provide universal basic income for everyone. Make education free and diverse, from trades to philosophy.
