Should people be punished more severely for assaulting or otherwise causing harm to someone if they did it for a reason like their sexuality or race?

I was 'bout to say Rezz...Really, it's ridiculous to punish someone for thinking something while committing a crime.

That would be the most hazy and indeterminable crime, because you would never know there true intentions and thoughts.

They catch people doing crimes before they commit them.

Who's to say he didn't? And if he did, what of it? He goes to jail for murder, or gets executed (For another debate) , end of discussion. What are you going to roast his dead body or give him a two lifetime sentence. Once again, you're punishing people for their thoughts. Think about that.
