Without love we wouldn't have hate. Problems solved.

Pretty much this.

However since an example was asked for, I personally hate that the government won't fund stem cell research. My hate isn't a bad thing and it actually motivates me to donate money to a good cause. Not to say that I wouldn't have otherwise donated some money, but it probably wouldn't have been a significant amount as opposed to almost half my student loan.

You'll notice, I hope, that there is a difference between your kind of hate (although I'd personally call it a disagreement) and one that drives people to commit an illegal act and cause damage to others. :\

I think the point most of you are continually missing is that "hate crimes" are being punished more severely than regular acts of violence because they cause damage to an entire group of people, instead of just the victim. That's why they cause greater damage to society and that's why they merit special treatment. I'm not sure why that's so hard to understand.

No more damage than any other threat, but threats aren't considered hate crimes. Thats even assuming you're trying to quantify it as a threat, which I fail to see what else you could be trying to quantify it as.

A crime is a crime. One's motivations behind committing a crime are irrelevant, especially considering the fact that they can't always be accurately unearthed.
When they can be unearthed is when they are punished. Also, unless that black person is the only black person in Carolina and Carolina doesn't have any newspapers or TV stations, others most certainly will find out about such a crime, and it will send a message of intolerance between black and white people furthering the divide and mistrust.

Sweep it under the carpet. Brilliant idea...

Point is....people shouldn't hate each other because of sexuality, sex, or race, no if's and's or buts'.

Sweeping problems under the carpet is not the way to solve them, they need to be addressed otherwise they keep perpetuating.

Do you have any data to support that claim?
