IMHO

its more the fact that it all --
gory movies
grisly games
suggestive music

desensitizes us to the violence
(and i agree with this)

making it easier for us to lose control
(i disagree with this)

and once we've lost control, to take the violence further than necessary
and further than what used to be know as 'common decency' would allow
'common decency' being the point at which we horrify ourselves with our outburst
