This is the best analysis I've heard so far about why Kamala lost, coming from a liberal perspective...

One thing that might have had more of an impact than people realize was the incident where someone seemed to say "Jesus is Lord" at a Kamala Harris event and got reprimanded. That I have seen people actually say turned them against her. So, one thing is that I think she underestimated religious voters, specifically Christians. I think it's mostly this.

Overconfidence. A lot of people were really talking her up and telling her how everything she was doing was huge and was very successful. Take the debate performance, there were a lot of people claiming that she obviously won. However, it's not judges that matter, did the voters think she won the debate?

Finally, for me personally, I think she did not expand her scope enough. From what I could tell, she made the campaign primarily about one or two issues.

I think these are top three reasons and, if I had been her campaign advisor, I would have been discussing these with her as they were happening.
Which ones?

I haven't been following closely to say the least, but the general impression I got is that they tailored her messaging to different constituencies, everything was group tested to death. What you said in the first sentence, about "will be different for different demographics", could be in fact part of problem.

So far as I saw, the things she spent the most time talking about were abortion and something about the middle class/working families. I really had to dig for that second one. It felt like, to me, that she really wanted to center the election around abortion. I suppose I can't really blame her for that since support for abortion is the popular position, but, if there are single issue voters with this as their thing, she loses a ton of people right off the bat with just that alone.

In a similar way, simply running as a Republican or a Democrat will cost you the support of nearly half of the country regardless of what you are actually saying. So, while I am not sure I would say trying to tailor her messaging to different constituencies was part of the problem, I think I will say that some of it may have been unnecessary and a waste of resources. I haven't been following too closely either, but I studied this from 2016-2018 and that initial loss of support from just whichever letter you attach to your name is the most brutal. After you get over that, though, it becomes about managing the swing voters, it's something that gets underestimated. The campaign starts awhile before the general, so it isn't enough to win over undecided voters, you have to find a way to keep them on your side the entire time.
