Where should I go from here?

I've decided to get real into alternative and old school country. I hate modern pop country so don't recommend me that. No offense if you like it it's just not for me.

I'm familiar with all the ones that cross with indie rock... Wilco, Calexico, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy...

Then the band that got me thinking I should get into alt-country, The Handsome Family, which I got introduced to with the opening of True Detective season 1.

So where do I go from here?

I guess this more fits in with the Wilco crowd, but I'd recommend Steve Earle if you can deal with liberal politics and Neko Case. Also Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins.

Seconded on Earle, though for real country go for his later albums, as the second and third are more in the country rock mould (though the first is pure country). Also check out Dwight Yoakam, and try Strawfoot too.

If you really want old-school though go for bluegrass

Check out Merle Haggard - one of my favorites of his is a A Portrait of Merle Haggard.

Waylon Jennings is another great

Where do you go from here? Maybe try and cure yourself of fundamentalism by giving this a listen ? It won’t kill you.

Love that husky butch voice. Brilliantly recorded too. Strange though he’s singing about the blues.

Your mileage may vary but my advice to anyone starting such threads is this: do the research yourself. That hard grafting will make you appreciate the fruits of your labour much more.

As for asking others, from personal experience, it's more miss than hit, as there are so many nuances to an artist or band that no two people will appreciate them all (well, that's unless you're the kind that's easy to please).

Now that we all have internet access, there's really no excuse. Before the internet, options were severely limited and yet I managed to discover a lot of new music on my own - most of which I still enjoy to this day.

True, the best way to discover different artists is to look in places like YouTube for example. I found all kinds of early country and blues there alone.

But threads like this are still good as it gives everyone an opportunity to post their own favorite artists of a specific genre, in this case, country.

After all, this is a music forum, right? :)
