Here's an album of instrumental chicha from "Perro Agradecido" (Grateful Dog) based out of the Federal District, Mexico. This is their debut, full-length album which was released in 2014.

Another favorite Mexican chicha group which I already mentioned in the first post on the first page of this thread. "Sonido Gallo Negro" with a recent live performance...

A new album from "Los Wembler's de Iquitos" of Peru. The five Sanchez brothers are still together, still going strong, and still making great music after 50 years of playing together.

Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical - Ranil's Jungle Party (1970) Here's a good one of mostly instrumental tunes from 'Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical' from Peru, led by Raúl Llerena Vásquez. I was on Raúl's email list and used to get updates from him every 2 or 3 weeks with information about music projects he was working on and his charitable work helping impoverished families in his area. The last email I received was from the 'Analog Africa' record label, about a month after I last heard from him, informing me of his death from COVID-19 in April of 2020. Yet another of several cumbia greats we lost last year to the virus. Here's a nice mention of him in bandcamp from Analog Africa which was written before his passing... Quote:

I'm familiar with "Manzanita" and "Grupo Celeste" but everything else on this comp is new to me. This particular style is like Cumbia on Quaaludes (anyone else here remember Quaaludes?)... Quote:

Last December InfoPesa released Cumbias Chichadélicas II! It's also available in vinyl through their website. Also, Juan Ricardo Maraví - Alberto Maraví's son - has been running InfoPesa after Alberto died, and he has some vinyl mixes on youtube that are just amazing! Spoiler for the other episodes!:
My favorite song gotta be Cariñito, by Los Hijos del Sol, the opening track of mix #4! |
Faustina Calavera is a Cumbia and Chicha band from... Wroclaw Poland(?) They sound good thou! - Despite that not being much decolonial of my part the original is by Juaneco y su Combo Cumbia Calavera, on the other hand, is very decolonial. :p They are a band from Brasil, but has members from Chile, Argentina, Peru and other countries from latam. I had the pleasure to watch 'em play on my town, and they were my introduction to cumbia! Here's them playing Cariñito in São Paulo: Sadly they don't seem to have studio version of their songs and seem to solely be a fanfare street band. In my town they did the show in the square downtown, and they went in the middle of the people with their instruments, a helluva party, lemme tell ya! The end of the show was a big grim reaper gigantone (Processional giant), telling the band that their time has come, and that they should come with them, and then they left while playing a cumbia version of "St. James Infirmary", it was magickal, legit one of the best music shows i've gone to! I have videos of this performance, maybe I can upload them later. |
