There's a very visible subset of gypsies in Europe engaged in a mixture of panhandling and theft and people tend to frown upon that.

I was surprised by the hatred.

One of them asked me for money in Bulgaria, I felt sorry for him and my friend said not to give him anything. Then he pulled a wad of notes out and laughed and the locals chased him and threw beer bottles at him. They were telling us how much they hate gypsies.

He was about 9 years old.
