Jason Isbell

I searched around and couldn't find a thread for Jason so I decided to make one.

Jason Isbell hailing from Green Hill, Alabama. Former guitarist, songwriter, and singer from Athens, Georgia based band Drive-By Truckers. His music touches on many different genres, Americana, country, roots rock, whatever you want to deem his stuff. Jason has had ups and downs throughout his career including battles with substance abuse, but has now gotten his life straightened out has a beautiful wife, Amanda Shires, that is an established artist in her own right and they do play on each others records. Jason also welcomed his first daughter into the world earlier this month.

As far as Isbell's music goes, he's released 3 studio albums with his band, The 400 Unit, and 2 albums credited without the band. His latest two works have been his two strongest and most consistent releases with his 2013 effort, Southeastern, possibly being my favorite album of all time.

Best songwriter around right now. Trollheart reviewed Southeastern in his love/hate thread at my urging. He loved.

Couldn't agree more. Good to see other fans around here.

Southeastern is such a great album. Never had an album grabbed me in the way that one did upon my first listen. Absolutely incredible.

Thanks for this recommendation, Traveling! I missed Plankton´s mention of JI so his is a new name to me. I really like the lyrics of Speed Trap Town, so will be listening to the rest of this album pretty soon - and by association, Drive-By Truckers have now nudged past The Outlaws and Widespread Panic as bands I really should check out someday...

Just putting my two cents in here, I would HIGHLY suggest checking out the Drive-By Truckers albums with Isbell. Decoration Day, The Dirty South and A Blessing and a Curse. While the band released some good stuff before then, mostly the bands second album Southern Rock Opera, and have continued to release good albums since. I find that those three with Isbell were the peak releases for the band. Certainly worth checking out though. A rare band where they had three songwriters at one time in those years. And all three done vocals, as well.
