Googoosh - sincerity and passion
I only came across Persian pop a week ago and I never heard such conviction and power in popular music. Like many people in the West I thought Iran was full of religious zealots and terrorists. Instead, I found a very sophisticated musical culture and amazing passion and beauty.
Try Daryiae by Googoosh - on youtube search Daryiae I can find absolutely no-one who will even try out this wonderful music, let alone discuss it, which is why I'm here. In hope. |
Great song.
I was expecting some sugary pop, instead it's classy. Very nice instrumentation, arrangement and melodies. Do you happen to have the album? |
Very haunting and beautiful. I'll post it here since the OP can't post youtube vids yet. :)
I don't know if it was time period or style of singing, but it immediately brought this song to mind, too: Fayrouz is legendary. |
It's so weird.
When I searched for it initially I found another version of that song which I liked more than this one, but now I'm unable to find it again. So confusing. |
Was it something on this playlist Grindy?

I'm unable to find it anywhere again. Perhaps I dreamt the whole thing. |
I like a lot of Iranian cinema, so music might be interesting to check out.

There is a beautiful version showing her subtlety of phrasing and total control of the most powerful emotions. I cannot post links yet, but I'll post all that I know once I'm able.
The song is also know as Komakam Kon کمکم کن |
That Fayrouz track is amazing.
I's strange that I found out that I had ancestry from four of Iran's major ethnic groups a month ago, I sought Googoosh because I heard a French radio programme with French-Afghan cineaste Atiq Rahimi. I had no idea it would take over my life. It can't be that genes effect the ethnicty of the music we enjoy - can it? |
Nice track. It made me think of:

First Googoosh song I ever heard
:) |
I listened to Googoosh for the first time this week thanks to a what.cd freeleech "event". Really really good stuff. It was her self titled compilation if anyone was looking for a suggested album.
|
I first her after hearing Atiq Rahimi the Afghan film-maker talk about her on France-Inter radio. He had been exiled for some time and he heard her on French radio. He said he walked straight to the airport and got a plane and back to his own 'cradle' Afghanistan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXqrz21IqEo As thousands of Syrians, Iraqis, Afghans, Somalis and Eritreans make their way to Europe, I hope the agony of the exile will be remembered and that few permanently leave their 'cradle' unless it is absolutely necessary. Googoosh can arouse such fierce passion. My favourite song of hers is Shabe Shishei - the combination of syncopated waltz time and subtle modulations makes my eyes fill with tears and my heart with the most tender of emotions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsU0WHTeOYs |
