Georgian Folk Music

Hello everyone.
Georgia is a small country located in Caucasus. It has ancient polyphonic folk music. I'd like to share some of my recordings to you.
Dance song:

Lyric song on native instrument Chonguri:

Joking song:

And these are two feast songs, which feature special yodeling like voice, called krimanchuli:

Hope you like it :)

Not bad. :)

OccultHawk 07-29-2015 05:41 PM

Can you give the names of recommended artists to check out instead of just YouTube links?

ChelseaDagger 07-29-2015 07:42 PM

I liked the first one best, but the yodeling ones were pretty cool. Very talented... As a side note, it's good to see Macaulay Culkin back in showbiz. ;)

It sounds like Isis having a shindig....

Never heard any georgian music except The Shin, seems interesting.

I'd like to second OccultHawk's request. I much prefer listening to albums, than to some YT vids.

There are many videos on yt, which say that they are folk, but actually are just low quality music, written in past 5-15 years.

As for recomendations, the best you can listen are: basiani (ბასიანი), anchiskhati (ანჩისხატი, anchisxati), didgori (დიდგორი), sakhioba (სახიობა), adilei (ადილეი), shavnabada (შავნაბადა).
And the videos I've posted are just from small part of western Georgia. There are many different styles depending on part. I can't post links yet, so you'll have to search by those names. There are quite many on yt and soundcloud.

Who would have thought. :)

And by the way, the girl singing in the last video is french :)

Thsnks

I enjoyed the first video most. Thanks

dqiria 08-03-2015 05:53 AM

First one is bit simple compared to others, because it has only two voices, but it's also easier to listen for starters :)
And here is another song in it's true place, where it belongs - among people :)

dqiria 08-05-2015 01:12 PM

And this is a work song, which has the most complex polyphony in Georgian songs, because it has 4 voices (parts).
People used to sing these songs for hours during field work, it gave them strength and joy. :)

Amazing polyphony. While being unique there is a superficial similarity to Corsican polyphonic chant.

I used to love the Rustavi choir 'chakrolo'(?) who were popular in the west in the early 90s.

Yes, eastern Georgian and Corsican music have quite a similarity. Rustavi choir is still performing and is quite popular.
As for Chakrulo, it's one of the jewels of eastern Georgian songs. It was sent on Voyager Golden Record.
This is the record they sent:

I can't express the joy of hearing this beautiful music again.

dqiria 09-03-2015 05:25 AM

Glad to hear that. :)
Here's another song in that style

Yarina 11-01-2015 08:54 AM

Modern Georgian music is also beautiful. Nino Katamadze & Insight for example. Haven't you thought of making a thread for modern music?

Yes it is and Nino is a very talented singer, but for me folk music stands on an entirely different level :)

Also, the group I've been posting most is doing a crowdfunding for a tour in US, so maybe you'd check it out :)
