Throat and overtone singing
There are many throat singing and overtone singing traditions around the world and also lots of modern singing with those elements. Any fans here?
Some examples: Huun-Huur-Tu might be among the more famous tuvan groups: Huun Huur Tu - Chiraa-Khoor - YouTube Sainkho Namtchylak, also from Tuva, mixes traditional music with more modern and experimental stuff. Here seen doing something more traditional though. Khöömii singing (Sainkho Namtchylak) - YouTube Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun might be a more obscure example. His music is unusual, because the tuvan singing is accompanied by the bayan, a russian type of accordeon 01 - How The Shadow Is Clear (Divine Music From A Jail, 1999) - Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - YouTube A breathtakingly beautiful piece by the immensely talented mongolian singer Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, mostly known as Enkh Jargal. Mongolian Overtone Singer , amazing - YouTube Some western overtone singing by Christian Bollmann. A little too "new age" perhaps, but nonetheless beautiful and technically astounding. Obertongesang, Christian Bollmann - YouTube Two clips by Christian Zehnder, a swiss singer who mixes throat singing, yodeling and other styles into something probably best described as imaginary folklore. zehnder - picnic with the monk - part two - YouTube zehnder - picnic with the monk - part one - YouTube |
I am a fan of most weird creative **** haha. Here's another haunting one, maybe you were in plug when I played it the other night:
Good thread! |
Kongar ool-Ondar might be one of the more famous throat singers, having appeared on Letterman.
Kongar-ol Ondar on David Letterman's Late Show - YouTube Bolot Bayrishev from the Altay region. The lyrics are in russian, which is an interesting combination, but most likely unnoticeable if you don't speak the language. Bolot Bayrishev - Shaman - YouTube Tyva Kyzy, a great all-female group from Tuva. Traditionally the singing was mostly limited to men, but thankfully that changed since female throat singing sounds great. Tyva Kyzy - Setkilimden sergek yr-dyr. (trad. - Arr. Tumat Choduraa) - YouTube |

But I never explored tibetan music. Thanks. Any tips besides the video you posted? |
I think Oidupaa is my favourite. Here's Arrington de Dionyso of Old Time Relijun. His solo stuff is throat singing based and pretty awesome, he also adds in some throat singing to OTR's music.

Spent a short time digging into Tuvan throat singing earlier this year, Oidupaa is also my favourite. Yat-Kha is pretty great too.
This is probably my favourite overtone style track ever recorded. Unstoppable throat bass. |

I'm also a fan of de Dionyso's music. This guy is great at pretty much everything he does. |
