Default Looking for an Arabic drone

I first got interested in Middle Eastern music after seeing Black Hawk Down about a decade ago. I'm getting antsy for more stuff like Hans Zimmer's harmonic minor themes throughout the film, particularly the very opening sequence to the first track, "Hunger." Unfortunately I can't post a link but it should be a few mouse clicks away.

What I'm looking for takes place in the first 10 seconds or so, before the vocalist comes in, although that sequence is very beautiful as well. What is that string instrument being played? It's very mysterious and melancholy.

Is there any more music like this? Is this a specific genre, like a more Arabic form of the Indian Raga? Thanks, any help is appreciated!

One of my bandmates has a drone project, but it's Pakistani, not Arabian:
