Bluegrass suggestions

I occasionally get into a bluegrass mood and will load up some Tony Rice Unit or some classics like Flat n Scruggs, Monroe, Doc Watson, etc. Wondering if anyone has any more modern day suggestions similar to Tony Rice Unit. Love their version of Midnight on the Stormy Deep.

Seeing as how you said you liked Pink Floyd you should check out Luther Wright & The Wrongs. All their albums are bluegrass, but their first one was a complete cover of The Wall, but as bluegrass.

I tend to prefer originals to bluegrass covers. They're neat for novelty, but thee's some degree of cross-contamination going on. That being said, I like Iron Horse's bluegrass cover of Sanitarium and Unforgiven:

I learned this one on mandolin, but I play it so slow it sounds like celtic music when I do it.

I'll just keep posting my tastes:

I quite liked the Cattle In The Cane clip you posted, Xurtio, and for me, slower means better when it comes to bluegrass, as I find I quickly tire of that hectic picking style. A little bluegrass makes a good contrast between other, more leisurely material, but I don`t like every song to sound like a race against the clock. Doc Watson used to get the balance about right, imo. ( More on him here if you are interested: http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...oc-watson.html )

Can`t come up with anything to match LPete`s extraodinary selection; in fact I can only add a name you must know already; Béla Fleck, who dilutes pure bluegrass with so many other elements that it sometimes isn`t bluegrass at all. In this clip, though, he stays close to the traditional sound, and is accompanied by Jerry Douglas. (More on him here if you are interested:http://www.musicbanter.com/country-f...y-douglas.html )

Thanks Lisna. Cattle in the Cane might be my current favorite. I love Doc Watson; his tapes with his son were great! My uncle introduced me long ago. I don't know the name of my favorite song by him but I can play it on guitar.... and it's rather slow, almost bluesy.

^ You`re welcome, Xurtio!
The photo in your signature is great, and I gave it a click because of the intriguing name. In fact I`m enjoying the Magnum Opus track as I type this! Is that your own band ? My first impression is positive, but I need to hear it some more before I come up with a proper comment.

Yes, that's my band. Thanks for listening! It's just live improvisation jams, nothing structured. One of our members got deported just recently and that was the last set of jams we did while he was going through the deportation process.

The picture is of Bent's Fort in Colorado!

Wow! I`m sorry to hear that - getting deported is a pretty traumatic process. Lucky for me that the recordings are just jams as I particularly like that kind of rambling structureless structure. Just finished hearing Serimova which has a nice interlude of slow, solo picking.
I`m not a musician myself, but if you want to rub shoulders with other MB musicians, this is the place to go: http://www.musicbanter.com/song-writ...owcase-41.html. IDK if you`ve worked out that we have some rules about self-promotion here; you`re expected to show that you have a genuine interest in being an MB member rather than just being here to get publicity. In effect, that means post around, make some aquaintances and you should be ok. Good luck -and welcome to MB, btw.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been meaning to make it over to the showcase for a listen at the "local" talent.
