Play locally and create a buzz, then try to get on local radio stations, per that buzz. Be like, "We just had seven million people at our show. Please play this track."

Reverbnation, Soundcloud, Soundclick, Bandcamp, Purevolume, and countless others. The main thing to do in most free audio upload sites is to network. Create a profile, and listen to other peoples music on the sites, and most importantly, comment on their music. Forums are another good way of networking. Depending on what instrument(s) you play there are hundreds of forums out there to accomodate any instrument. For example, I play guitar so I've joined 4 or 5 guitar oriented forums over the years and have had some great learning experiences through them as well as adolation for my craft.
Be accessible, openminded, and courteous.
