Every two weeks the Folk And International Roots Album Club votes for an album that they will listen to and discuss in the coming weeks.

It's vocals and accordian, written and recorded during Oidupaa's Serbian imprisonment. It's a gorgeous album and it has some of the best throat singing I've ever heard.

In a surprising change of style, JS put aside the punk fury of London Calling and made an excentric album of shuffling, urban reggae and folk-rock. He furthur expanded his own particular vision of the multi-cultural music scene on his next album, Global A Go Go, but song for song, I think Rock Art is stronger. Don`t dismiss these albums (as I did for years) as an exercise in musical tourism; they are much more consistant and convincing than that. And if you`re wondering if this is really FAIR music, well JS himself described this Yalla Yalla track as " an ancient British folk song - written in 1999" That`s a good enough excuse for me !

Sainkho Namtchylak & Ned Rothenberg - Amulet

Beautiful album consisting of saxophone (bass, I believe) and vocals from two musicians who truly know their instrument. It goes through an amazing field of textures in so little time and the two really complement one another.

Thanks as always to the people who make the effort to share their enthusiasm for FAIR music here.

I couldn't vote for or listen to Ana Flavia because I am Brazil'd out at the moment. That said, I liked the oud player the best from this round. :)

:laughing: Yes, I can imagine, after that iPod full of Brazilian music !

I`m very glad that you`ve decided to give us a try, Miss P ; as you`ll notice soon enough, the club operates at a sedate pace, and there aren`t a lot of contributors, but at least that means you`re assured of a warm welcome ( :thumb:) and a chance to be heard.

The FAIR Club has been running for over 18 months now, which I believe is pretty good by MB standards. But given our desultry progress, the club could take as it`s motto that line from The Grateful Dead, "Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin´ on." On the other hand, perhaps this has a more up-beat ring to it; "...to explore strange new worlds... to boldly go where no MB-er has gone before !"

I used to love the old, original series with Spock, Bones and Kirk. Never really followed the subsequent versions though ...

Anyway, rather more on topic, we have a winner with the Joe Strummer album, so that means that a thread will open on March 7th so we can share our opinions about Rock Art And The X-Ray Style . On the same day, a new poll will open for voting on our next album - so some new album nominations would be very welcome !
