Scandinavian/Nordic Folk

Into folk music from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and/or Denmark? I'm not too keen about the others, the only folk I listen to is Finnish, but if you're into one or more of those, then this is the thread for discussion of them! Favorite artists? Favorite albums? Horrible artists/albums? Live experiences?

Discuss!

Welcome Crinn. What are some examples of Finnish folk that you are into?

I've been listening to Myllärit for over ten years now. They're REALLY good, playing Finnish folk with modern-day rock instruments and folk instruments. The band that I've recently fallen in love with is Gjallarhorn (Swedish-speaking Finns). The violins and the vocals are absolutely tranquilizing (see video below). Most of the other folk I hear..I see live performances at Scandinavian festivals in Seattle, random compilation CDs, and stuff I randomly stumble upon while on YouTube.

A Gjallarhorn fan myself; Ranarop and Rimfaxe would be my preferred two released.

Some groups I’ve been listening to recently

Another honorable mention; a bit of Finnish schlager folk (one of my all time favorites).

Some other favorites, Tenhi and Nest. I just discovered Tenhi recently; been enjoying them very much.

Both groups blend ambient into neofolk to varying degrees.

I'm a Finn. Most of the bands here are totally unfamiliar to me. :) But you should definitely check out Pekko Käppi. Because of him, an ancient Finnish instrument called jouhikko (distant cousin of the violin) has been rediscovered. He's been doing all kinds of stuff with it from traditional folk to punk music and beyond.

Nordman is always a good one to listen too if you like modern swedish folk music.

A recent addition to the scene is Thomas and Guro - try to find the album Lamslatt on Spotify - beautiful hardanger fiddle and cittern, and fresh tunes that sound really authentic!
