Russian Music
Here are some gems from the gold age of Russian music.
Anyone else a fan of Russian music? ВИА "Верасы" Я у бабушки живу [VIA] of " [Verasy]" I in grandmother live I think the singer's name is Jadwiga. ВИА "Верасы" Любовь моя [VIA] of " [Verasy]" Love is my The melody of Jadwiga's backing vocals from 2:13 to 2:19 sounds like Ave Maria by Franz Schubert - imo. ВИА "Здравствуй, песня" Не обещай [VIA] of " How do you do, [pesnya]" Do not promise ВИА "Пламя" Идёт солдат по городу [VIA] of " [Plamya]" [Idet] of soldiers around the city Some of these songs may not be too familiar so I have to include this unforgettable rendition of a more popular Russian song. Moscow Night - A Russian folk Song - Interpreted by Stanley Power |
I like Arsenal which I guess could be called a jazz fusion band that incorporated a range of influences in their music.
I didn't find the track I wanted, but here's the opener from the debut album. Some of this is quite RIO-y, but it's in no way representative of their music as a whole. |
I don't know much but one or two modern bands:
Post-jazz, instrumental 8-piece group from St. Petersburg I believe. |

After some more searching, I was able to find one of my favourite tunes. I have their music from a box-set containing all their work, but I believe this is from their second studio album. I'm afraid I have to run to work, but I'll check out Trio Voronezh when I come back :) |
Russian old song are a amazing songs here. Keep it up.!

I only know Vladimir VISSOTSKY. I don't understand the smallest word but that's the kind of job that touch my soul.

Having posted more than 15 posts I think I'm now mature enough to put some links here so here we go. :) As an example of a genre that was well represented in Soviet Russia & other Soviet states I can post some old skool electronica from the 80s. Zodiak from Latvia are a pretty legendary band. You could easily call them the Kraftwerk of Latvia. Here's the opening track from their 1980 debut album "Disco Alliance":
For some reason, some of the coolest Soviet electronica I've found is featured on LPs that are intended for sports / aerobics background music. "Pulse: Sport and Music" LP trilogy has some really cool electronica tracks by various artists (Arsenal is also featured there btw!). Perfectly fit for the dancefloor b-boys & fly girls. Here's a couple of examples: |

Странные Игры or Strannye Igry or "Strange Games" was a ska/newwave band but when compared to Western ska bands, their approach was much more experimental and unconventional. They were the band that introduced ska to Russia and you can definitely hear Russian bands who have that ska element even today. Here's a couple of tracks from their awesome 1985 album.
|
Here's some awesome hippie rock from the 70s from different parts of Soviet Union with some local folk music influence added for flavour.
Iveria or Иверия from Georgia. This epic 11-minute track features funky fuzzy killer psychedelic rock with a nice "ethnic" touch. It's a kind of collage / sequence of short minisongs without breaks. This is as funky as it can get! Pesniary or Песняры from Belarus showing some stunning choir harmonies. Just watch the whole video: they will hit the rock gear eventually! Ok, this is from early 80s but still. Yalla or Ялла from Uzbekistan and a track from their ridiculously versatile 1982 album (no two songs from the same musical genre featured). This song sounds like early 70s Brazilian tropicalia! |
Also, here is my one-hour Soundcloud mixtape of freakout Soviet era space disco, space rock & space new wave! Hypnotic synthesizers bleeps, robotic vocoders and electric drum kits are all over the place here. Check it out!

This songs reminds me a little of Da da da by Trio, it reminds me of another song from the 90s too.

I started a Russian rock thread, this one is beyond redemption me think :)
|
This thread needs to be seriously bumped, so here are some artists I'd recommend.
AuktYon were already featured, but there have to be some live videos. Those guys rock so hard. Here's one with the great Marc Ribot Vezhlivyj Otkaz play some jazzy, recently even somewhat avant-proggish music, but still very song-oriented. Let's move on to some dirtier stuff. Grazhdanskaya Oborona might be considered punk. I'm not a big fan of punk, but I enjoy GO's lo-fi sound and Sergei Letov's emotional singing style. And back to the mainstream, here's Nautilus Pompilius with a nice acoustic version of one of their hits. Sergej Kurehin was an incredibly talented and versatile musician. As well as a virtuoso pianist, he was a composer (often for films) and organizer of huge musical happenings, featuring dozens of musicians of different backgrounds playing together and mixing music with absurdist theatre. He was an actor as well and made a famous mockumentary parodying conspiracy theories, where he "proved" that Lenin was a mushroom. Here's a beautiful piece from the movie "Mister Designer" and a solo piano improvisation, mixing classical quotes with more modern forms. |
I would love some Russian Rock recommendations guys:D I've really gotten into Russian culture (because I think Cyrillic looks cool) and want to get into the music as well. I already have Би-2, АлисА, Кино, and Animal Джaz. But I'd like to find other musicians:3
|
Another Би-2 fan? Cool! :D 2 favorites: «Полковнику никто не пишет» (Nobody writes to the colonel - From Брат 2) and «варвара» (Lol! Barbara + barbarian?). Ой, как смешно! (Funny!)
Земфира? (Zemfira) No thx. Way too Ukrainian. Should be spelled Земфiра. I'm totally NOT a Ukrainian music fan... Anyway, she was all over Rossiyskaya gazeta and Komsomolskaya pravda yesterday and today. Epic fail imo. If she put that much energy in her music, she might be worth listening to. But that's just me. But hey, Мумий Тролль or Mummies Troll (Дельфины!). Тигр! Возвращение леопарда! (dolphins, tigers, return of the leopard). The band's way cool, their music totally owns, and they help save endangered animals. But the band did start out in Vladivostok so yeah (where people fish, sell cars, or get all over endangered species). And Пилот (hard rock!). And zOOmg! Смысловие Галлюцинации (Semantic Hallucinations)! They played Вечно Молодой (Forever Young) at Chart Dozen. :D And no way I can ever forget Наутилус Помпилиус (Nautilus Pompelius). Зверь (Beast) I can never un-hear. And ДДТ (DDT) and Сплин (Spleen). I totally recommend Наше радио (Our radio). Tons of cool music. I also recommend Чпртова Дюжина (Chart Dozen)! More later. Удачи! |
Up this thread. All themes around Russia are hyping this year. :)
|
I suppose that Pussy Riot is favourite Batlord's Russian band.
