Another Oud player, this time from Tunisia.

Anouar Brahem - Conte de l'Incroyable Amour (1992)

Ok this is my third nomination but to be honest my last two haven't really stood up to repeated listens. The Ana Flavia and Anouar Brahem sounded good at first but there are definite flat spots on both albums that make me doubt my nominations.

So on to my next attempt...

Dos Cafundós - Capitão Coração (2012)

If Zappa was Brazilian I would imagine it would sound something like this. He is cited as an influence by the band and it is certainly apparent.

Thanks for the recent album nominations, stp and frownland. They all sound intriguing in their way, and will go into next week`s poll, opening on November 7th.

Yeah as I said above I'm not that committed to the Ana Flavia and Anouar Brahem. They both have some nice tracks but on the whole I'm not sure they have held up under closer scrutiny.

^ Well, I already know which of those three nominations I`ll be voting for!

I guess we always hope for albums that`re good all the way through, but there are plenty of reasonable albums that aren`t like that. Luckily, these days we aren`t stuck with the rigid vinyl intentions of the artist - we can edit down own version and turn a flawed album into a short, but great album.

Let me know if you actually want to withdraw a nomination - otherwise, they`ll just go into the pot and I guess the vast FAIR club membership will decide how worthy they are. But thanks, as always, for putting up some nominations, stp, and helping to keep this club afloat.

So I realise the Dos Cafundos is not folky in any way and I'm just wondering if it fits the FAIR club mandate? The reason I ask was I was also thinking of nominating Älgarnas Trädgård - Delayed which is in no way folky being a 70s Swedish psychedelic/prog band. This album is all kinds of awesome. :)

That`s interesting, stp.
Maybe the club has been too purist. I thought that there would be plenty of scope and interest in folky stuff, but perhaps that`s been too restricting.
I don`t have any problem with expanding the eligible genres - though I`m not sure how we`d re-title or re-define what the club is looking at. If we say "any style of world music", that would quickly become "any music at all", wouldn`t it ?
Why don`t we put your latest nomination, Algarnas Tragard, in for now and think about what we might do with the club ? As far as I`m concerned, it`s basically up to the two of us if we want to mix things up a bit. What do you think ?

Well I guess prog is already covered by another club so it might be a little redundant to start crossing over just on the basis of them not singing in English. Still I guess nobody is going to be too upset by blurring the boundaries. I guess if nobody voted for it the question answers itself.

Lisnaholic 11-07-2012 11:42 AM

You`re right, no-one`s going to mind if we put Algarnas Tragard in. Unless I hear otherwise I`ll include it in the poll I`m going to post later today or tomorrow.
Thinking about it, though, if it`s prog rock, people would probably expect it to be in the prog section. For instance, that`s where I found Harmonium (who sing in French) and if I wanted to check out Kraftwerk I`d go to the Electronic forum first; somehow, German lyrics don`t turn Autobahn into world music, do they ?
On the other hand, we did listen to Ernest Ranglin here, although there`s a separate reggae forum too; and the thread for Afro-pop turned up in this forum rather than the pop forum.
So there isn`t much consistancy. Of course one solution is that you stop discovering all this obscure music, stp. Can`t you just stick with Kylie Minogue and AC/DC for a while ?!

I can stop any time I want... honest. Well maybe one more. LOL I was perusing the entire ECM catalogue like a shopping list last night. It's a sickness.
