Doc Watson
Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson, born March 3, 1923 in Deep Gap, North Carolina, is a guitar player, banjo player, songwriter and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues and gospel music. According to Doc on his three CD biographical recording “Legacy”, he got the nickname “Doc” during a live radio broadcast when the announcer remarked that his given name Arthel was odd and he needed an easy nickname to go by. A fan in the crowd shouted “Call him Doc!” presumably in reference to the Sherlock Holmes sidekick Doctor Watson. The name stuck ever since.
I heard his song Shady Grove about 2 years ago and have been hooked on his music ever since, Amazing talent. He inspired me to go out and buy a Banjo (still not really played it much though) Anyone else here like his music?

An amazing musician and arguably one of the best guitar pickers ever. I had the opportunity to work with him doing sound for one of his shows a few years back and he was extremely gracious and a very nice guy. The show was great as well.

^ Wow ! Very impressed that you met him. Did he have any pearls of wisdom to pass on ?
I`m glad to hear that he was a nice guy, as that`s how he comes across on the "Essential Doc Watson" album I have. Recorded at Newport Folk Festival in '63 and `64, he gives a perfect rendition of song after song without any sign of artistic conceit - a quiet model for a lot of less talented musicians, no? |
