Yiddish Folk Songs

One of my favourite Yiddish folk songs is "Donna Donna". Here is the English language version by Joan Baez

& here is a Yiddish version by Chava Alberstein. Not a great version. Moishe Oysher does a far better version but I couldn't find it on you tube

I had never heard this song before. I enjoyed listening to Joan Baez singing "Donna Donna" once I read what the YouTube poster quoted Baez as saying about the song, which is a song for social justice and apparently even has a role in Czechosovakian history.

Thanks for posting such a sweetly melancholic old song, which goes so well with the photos of life in Cracow. It`s like watching an out-take from Schindler`s List !

I prefer to hear Yiddish songs sung in Yiddish, so I guess I prefered the Chava Alberstein version of Donna Donna, though Joan Baez does a good job too.

I agree, but there are other versions of that song I prefer, I just couldn't find them

The Yiddish folk songs was originated in 14th century. The sing was sung by the Jews of Eastern Europe. The songs were written in Hebrew scripts. The nature of the Yiddish songs was religious. There had been a famous Jewish musicians such as Steven Adler, Bob Dylan, Robbie Roberts, David Lee Roth, Carole King, Gary Glitter, Neil Sedaka, Leslie West, Al Cooper, Tasseomancy etc.

I have an album with Aviv Geffen on it does that count, guess it might as it's Blackfield 1 where most of the songs are Geffen's translated into English.
