i love them saw them in concert a few months ago so much fun

zekethefreak 09-02-2008 01:51 AM

I have seen The Avett Brothers twice, and they were two of the funnest shows I have ever seen. I also just heard one of the new songs, produced by Rick Rubin, and it was definitely toned down from their earlier work. Very good, but toned down. The early stuff was as close to a hybrid of Punk and Bluegrass as anyone has EVER ventured. At least the live stuff.

I'm stoked for the new album, to be sure...

the avett brothers are the **** "go to sleep" and "die die die" are the best...im suprised they dont have a bigger fanbase on here...unless they have a thread i missed

ProggyMan 10-04-2009 08:39 PM

Saw them live at Outside Lands, as great as their albums are you haven't heard anything until you've seen them live. New album sounds good from the iTunes samples, I'm d/ling it now.

ProggyMan 10-04-2009 10:00 PM

First impressions: I like the piano as the focus and the less bouncy tunes are a nice balance. Doesn't have as much punch as Emotionalism but I didn't expect it to. It seems the lyrical content and musical style are more introspective and considering that the album is currently number 12 on iTunes there will likely be lots of talk of 'selling out' but I don't see that here. I'm sure my perception will change though, we'll see if this has any staying power.

they're really awesome, they even made PASTE's cover in june.

ProggyMan 10-07-2009 11:34 PM

New album is hit and miss, a real departure from their earlier work. I really, really like some tracks, others are just meh. 3.75 stars I'd say.

i just adore the avett brothers right now!

The Avett Brothers

this is a great band that was suggested on the mumford and sons website forums to a OP asking for similar bands. I did a search and was very pleased by the results

(YouTube - The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You in case the video don't work, vevo sucks)

I'm listening to the rest of the I And Love And You album and I'm lovin it so far.

discuss?

TheBig3 10-17-2010 03:28 PM

This isn't half bad. Judging by their fans I really expected to hate it.

Edit: Though he comes off a little pious in that video, no?

FakePlasticKid 10-17-2010 05:33 PM

I didn't really watch the video I was sorta interested in the song but I guess so but that kinda happens alot with folk it doesn't normally mean anything

man i wish I hadn't went and looked at the comments on the video now, I see what you mean, looks like the fans are pissy "THEIR BETTER THAN THIS BAND" idiots. The comparison to mumford and sons was inevitable but the debate is getting idiotic in there

TheBig3 10-17-2010 06:43 PM

well I think from the few things I've heard they sound less pretentious than M&S which counts for quite a bit.

Welcome to MB, by the way.

FakePlasticKid 10-17-2010 08:12 PM

thank you

I see where you are comin from, I love Mumford & Sons and find their lyrics to be more just hopeful in bad situations, but thats up to the listener.

but yea Avett Brothers does have more literal lyrics which I do like

The Avett Brothers are a non-traditional bluegrass band that originated in Concord, North Carolina. The two brothers, Seth and Scott, formed the group after the breakup of the former rock band, Nemo, adding a third member, Bob Crawford. More recently, they have been joined by cellist Joe Kwon. The Avett Brothers combine old-time country, bluegrass, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk and ragtime to produce a sound described by the Washington Post as “post civil-war modern rock”, or by other reviewers as “grungegrass”. For a long time the group eschewed labels, feeling that “none would do the music justice.” Ironically the Avetts signed to Columbia Records on Independence Day 2008 to record their fifth album with acclaimed producer Rick Rubin. It’s simply left up to each person to extract his or her own account from the Avetts’ music.”

Their live performances, generally at smaller venues, showcase their use of three-part harmony and southern rock feel, and are admired for being intense, energetic, and soulful. The Avetts have been picking up steam opening for Dave Matthews Band and playing SXSW and Newport Folk Festival.

Personally i like this more then Mumford and Sons. MaS is the new hype and will slowly fade away. But if you like Avett Brothers, also try: Darling, The old crow medicine show, The everybodyfields.

Been checking out a couple albums. Emotionalism and I and Love and You. I like both albums, and both have great songs. However, they each have a couple stupid songs as well unfitting to the rest of the album.

Good stuff, thanks everybody for your thoughts!

Heard their shows are awesome, something like 13th banjo strings busted in a show once. That'd get a bit expensive but hey if it makes the fans happy, so be it.
