Rain Dog's Alt Country CD

For Beginers

Think you hate Country? I did once too, but if you like roots music you may be able to stomach an alt-country track listing, which is the equivelent of easing into the jaccuzi rather than cannonballing and and roasting your testicles (which in this extended metaphor is simply turning on a country radio station)

ok so here goes....

1. Johnny Cash - Ghost Riders in the sky
2. Willie Nelson - On the road again
3. Tom Waits - Blind Love
4. Neil Young - Harvest Moon
5. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay (if you can sub in here, I hate this song, but its country)

6. Big & Rich - Save a horse, ride a cowboy
7. Kathleen Edwards - Six O'clock News/In State
8. Langhorne Slim - Cut it Down
9. Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
10. Cake - Jesus wrote a blank check
11. Drive-by Truckers - Outfit
12. My Morning Jacket - Golden
13. Steve Earl - Home to Houston
14. Bright Eyes - Make War
15. Wilco - Forget the flowers
16. The Beatles - The Ballad of John and Yoko (sub in something more country)

17. Elton John - Tiny Dancer ( maybe grab the tim mcgraw version, wahtever)
18. Metallica - Mama Said
19. The Eagles - Life in the fast lane (it's bluegrassy)
20. The White Stripes - Hotel Yorba
21. Counting Crows - Aimee (non LP version)

Well as you can tell, I went for a couple of things here:

1.) It stayed realtivly mainstream to appeal to those compltly unfamiliar with the genre...

2.) There were some stretches but doing it from scratch its a working template posters can alter to fit their own tastes.

3.) I chosse some things I knew were country for the basis of getting them in there (I hate Lay Lady Lay, and is the Ballad of John and Yoko country enough)

Whatever, hopefulyl this will spark a minor fire in the country forum. please respond, politly or rude, just repsond.

hookers with machineguns 03-19-2005 10:19 PM

I like the first four songs, then the list just kinda dips.
Maybe add Hank Williams Jr or Jimmie Rodgers...oh wait, this is alt country. Nevermind.

Sweet Jane 03-26-2005 04:12 PM

I'm liking Loretta Lynn and Lydia Lunch at the moment.

I'd put money on you not knowin half the list, on top if it being for new comers and yes, alt-country.

SATCHMO 03-29-2005 09:58 PM

Blue- Lucinda Williams
Ol' 55 - Tom Waits
Helpless - Neil Young
To lay me Down - Grateful Dead (acoustic)
Mama Tried - merle Haggard
Good ol' boys (Dukes of Hazzard Theme) - Waylon Jennings

Pacific Blue 04-04-2005 05:50 AM

treading uncharted waters? If you want to get into alt country, try a selection - or all - of this. i'm sure you can try it all by downloading through limewire or whatever. hope you enjoy some of it...

gillian welch and david rawlings - my first lover/ revelator/ elvis presely's blues # monster talents!!!
wilco - company in my back/ i am trying to break your heart
kings of leon - wicker chair/ red morning light. # sweet young country punks.
be good tanyas - ship out on the sea/ waiting around to die # bluegrassy.
ryan adams - come pick me up/ bartering lines/ oh my sweet carolina. # the new everyone! bob dylan, gram parsons, u name it. duet w emmylou harris = heavenly.
jim white - bluebird.
bobbie gentry - sweet peony. # okay, old school. but good.
my morning jacket - if it smashes down. # my favourite song for, well, months now.
the loose salute - photographs and tickets. # new band, lovely west coast kind of sound.
16 horsepower - praying arm lane/ hutterite mile/ straw foot # deeply gothic, backwoods, jesus obsessed. brilliant
cowboy junkies - just want to see/ musical key # surely no intro required?
gronk!

Im ressurecting this peice to attempt to juice these forums out of the dead.

I think we can all jam at least one Altcountry song. please just use this thread to suggest any song you want to bring to the attention of MB, all threads after this (on my part) failed to get momentum here.

MURDER JUNKIE 12-14-2005 11:39 PM

anything by Neko Case - sounds like Patsy Cline
gives me an erection

TheBig3 04-14-2006 10:25 PM

/\ You know something, I just heard "Hold On, Hold On" from her Fox Confessor Brings the Blood and its ****ing tit.

And I don't see the connection, I think Patsy Cline sucks. Neko is amazing.

Also, I sorta recoil when comparing female singers to other female singers, as if theres only 5 female voices that go around.

MURDER JUNKIE 04-14-2006 10:46 PM

I appreciate the back up in the Neko department, too few people know how great she really is.Every bit of hype she gets she truly deserves

I get the same thing going with Neko Case.

Big3, have you checked out Son Volt?

TheBig3 04-15-2006 10:57 PM

No, I've missed both Son Volt and Uncle Telupo. Which I probably should have gotten on, but didn't. Odd on UT because I like some Wilco tracks. I'll go try SV now.

Recommendations?

I just found a song called Windfall that apparently someone sent me. Im in love with this song. Its country, but its not stupid, and the refrain is amazing. I think he's pretty damn good.

hookers with machineguns 05-01-2006 03:25 PM

Im the one that sent that to you, I'm pretty sure. It's off their very first album, god I can't remember the name. It came out 95, 96 somewhere around then. Their more recent stuff is more "alt-country" if you will. I personally like the stuff that's more roots-ish. Same feeling with Uncle Tupelo.

puddin 05-22-2006 07:01 AM

Palace Music.

stakeraiser 05-22-2006 10:28 PM

Take out that awful Big N Rich song

NaNaNer 02-22-2007 08:52 AM

I own and regualarly listen to nearly everything on the Big3's list...I never claimed to dislike country...but on further thought...maybe I like it more then I thought.

...yeah so I was wondering if you'd like to I don't know, go out for coffee some time...or ya know whatever /scratches head in fidgity way

And Stakeraiser, its not supposed to be for fans, it supposed to be for people who loathe country (or think they do). How long ago did I make this damn thread?

NaNaNer 02-22-2007 12:31 PM

Its easy to pick on country...just like its easy to on pop...people confuse the idea that if its popular its talentless cause young bubble popping girls made it popular. That made no sense..

*walks out looking for a coffee shop..

Hydrogen 03-15-2008 10:11 PM

Good stuff, and some that I'll be looking into soon. Cool.

Maybe the Jayhawks or Whiskeytown would fit in? Or Golden Smog. They're sort of like the Traveling Wilburys of this music, right? Something like that.

savannah 03-16-2008 03:47 PM

so i'm tryin to upload my current playlist to one of those file transfer joints,....but its takeing forever,.....anyway, hopefully i'll be done soon and will post it for whoever,....

TheBig3 11-25-2009 06:39 PM

I'd like to add this in here because I think on Starpower alone it will get people into the genre...

Elvis Costello and Stephen T. Colbert kick out Cheap Reward. Its ****ing phenomenal.

Edit: If someone can hit me with the site I can upload crap through I'll be getting this out to people as soon as I can.
