A classic from Colombia getting a limited re-released on vinyl (500 copies) at the end of this month...

Pedro Laza y Sus Pelayeros - Navidad Negra (1960)

An absolute milestone in South American music, Navidad Negra is a kaleidoscopic masterpiece where Cumbia, Cha-Cha, Porro, Fandango and Mambo merge all together, skillfully assembled with class by the one and only Pedro Laza Gutiérrez and his legendary orchestra. String bass player, music director, composer and arranger, Pedro was active starting in the '30s and not unlike many of his contemporaries he grew under the strong influence of the early jazz music coming off Colombian big city radio stations in those years. Pedro mixed that tradition with the Caraibic sounds coming from his native city of Cartagena, creating a special blend that made him one of the most popular Caribbean and South American artists during the 60's.

The album shall be named Valimbilo.
Bilo is a disease which strikes one’s mental health, depression is what western societies call it. When one is diagnosed with « voany bilo », a precise medical treatment is engaged and performed without doctors, nor medicine. To vanquish bilo, one has to use music.

The sorcerer solely decides upon the “good” day (the day which gathers the most positive aspects of the astrological conjuncture) to operate: the extended family hosts a ceremony ruled by many taboos, which can last up to a few days, and in which only one remedy is applied in high dosage : some tsapiky music.
They are “doctor” musicians whom talent is source of the cure.
They play for the patient, who has to be facing the orchestra : all of their attention is focused on the bilo, dancing in the sick person’s body : It has to be awaken, seduced, surprised and attacked from every angle before it is pressured, pressured until KO, until it can’t take the it anymore, stuffed with music. Then the patient is relieved, discharged, and the ceremony is over.

During the entirety of the ceremony, the patient picks a person who helps him/her get the bilo out of his/her system, this is what we call “valimbilo”, literally “husband/wife of the bilo”

"Illusion Machine", the second album by Bret Higgins' Atlas Revolt is amazing. The debut on Tzadik was already killer but this easily trumps it.
Sounds a bit like Bar Kokhba, but they have enough of their own thing going on.
Lisna and Psy-Fi really need to check it out. Every single track rules.

^ Thanks for the rec, grindy. That's a great track. One thing I liked about it was that I couldn't place it to region or tradition as you sometimes can with more generic world music.

^ Not bad. I listened to both albums this morning. Not sure if I'll add them to my collection yet. I'll have to give them a few more listens.

The $1000 (CAD) ($744.59 USD) price of the debut's download, put me off a bit.
I assume it's just a typo and the price is supposed to be $10 (CAD).
