Hi Burning Down,
Yes, isn't "Puff" a lovely song? Quote:

I hadn't thought of the value of songs for teaching children foreign languages, but that's a good point you make...especially since many early songs by the Beatles, for example, have quite simple lyrics. When I took German (in high school) we listened to Nena's "99 Luft Balloons" in the original German, which I love to this day (both the song and the language)! (I know it is not folk music, but I include it here anyway YouTube - Nena 99 Luft Balloons).

Pippi Longstocking! I didn't realize Astrid Lindgren was not just an author but also a songwriter! Thanks for the information, Liljagare. I used to love the Pippi Longstocking stories when I was a child.

Hello Folks,
Now here's an old country/folk song I loved singing during my childhood..."You are my Sunshine"...which was made famous by Jimmie Davis in the 1940s. I thought of adding it to this thread because the other day while volunteering at my child's 1st grade class, the teacher asked kids to play a music game in which a child volunteers to stand up, start singing a song, and the rest join in if they know it. Well, a little 6-year-old stood up and started singing beautifully the lyrics to "You are my Sunshine," and many of the kids knew this song and were able to join in! I thought this especially interesting because there are kids from a variety of ethnicities in the class. I was touched (and surprised!) that their families are introducing them to this old song more than 60 years after the song was first sung. Here's a YouTube video of "You are my Sunshine" that I think is cute because it shows so clearly how this song is passed on from one generation to the next:
