Awesome tapes from Africa
does anyone else check out this amazing blog?
Awesome Tapes from Africa current post is Moroccan others vary widely in source and style. I like about 1/2 to 3/4 of what gets posted but it never fails to at least be interesting and usually of very high quality (not sound quality, which leans toward low-fi cassette - but musical quality, even if not to taste) |

Interesting blog. There seems to be so much stuff on there and no doubt a lot of crap but a rummage around might unearth a few gems.

Thanks for mentioning the Awesome Tapes from Africa! I was not aware of this blog before. I've done international dancing since I was 5, and we often have songs from all over the world that sound like many of the ones on this blog. My impression is that a lot of folk songs from around the world are often combined with dancing. If you want to experience some of these songs to their fullest, I recommend you visit a local international folk dance group, if you have not done so already: dancing to music like this (like the Moroccan music) is even more engrossing than simply listening, I feel. --Erica |

Very interesting link there - I'll go through it with a fine-tooth comb a bit later.
There's a similar kind of site to this which I haven't been on in years, I think it's called Calabash Music, which is good for legal downloads and such. It's laid out in a much more orderly way too. At least I think it's still online anyhow. |

I thought I´d just mega necro bump this thread from 2009 because the link, the site, the music is still there, and it´s a goldmine of obscure music. I don´t suppose many of us have or will browse through a secondhand record shop in Africa, but this website at least gives us a hygienic armchair taste of what we might find there.
